Historic Mission
For the first time ever, a Space Force Guardian is heading to space to bring back stranded astronauts. Col. Nick Hague has been tapped for this groundbreaking mission, making history as the first active-duty Space Force Guardian to embark on a space mission. π‘οΈπ
This high-stakes rescue mission will see Hague piloting a SpaceX Dragon capsule to the International Space Station (ISS) to retrieve astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, whoβve been stuck aboard since their rideβthe Boeing Starlinerβmalfunctioned during a mission earlier this summer. π¬π°οΈ
What Went Wrong?
The Starliner, which was supposed to complete a short eight-day trip in June, has been plagued by issues that left the astronauts unable to return to Earth. The capsule will return uncrewed on September 6, but Williams and Wilmore remain marooned until Hague arrives to bring them home on the Crew-9 mission slated to launch later this month.
Their extended stay on the ISS, which will now total over seven months, is a far cry from the original plan. πβ³
Not Hague’s First Space Adventure
Although this is his debut as a Space Force Guardian, it’s not Hague’s first rodeo in space. He spent six months aboard the ISS back in 2019 while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Hague also survived a near-catastrophic Soyuz rocket failure in 2018, when the launch malfunctioned, forcing an emergency mission abort. Talk about close calls! π³π’
Since transitioning to the Space Force, Hague has taken on a leadership role as the branch’s Director of Test and Evaluation, and now he’s set for another incredible chapter in his spacefaring career. ππ
Whatβs Next?
If all goes according to plan (fingers crossed π€), Hague will bring the stranded astronauts back to Earth no sooner than February 2024. However, given the history of delays surrounding this mission, nothing is set in stone just yet.
As the Space Force continues to evolve, Hagueβs mission marks a defining moment, solidifying the branch’s role in future space exploration. Whether it’s rescuing astronauts or testing new technologies, the Space Force is truly beginning to leave its mark in the final frontier. ππ¨βπ
